I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once
I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath
the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
William Wordsworth 1770-1850
In 1802 Wordsworth 'Wandered lonely as a cloud'. Today he would have somewhere to stay.

If your desire is to absorb the spectacular, breathtaking scenery which surrounds this small, busy market town on foot, there are innumerable walks starting right outside our front door!! Great heights can be achieved by walking up Skiddaw (pronounced 'Skidder') 3054 feet and the oldest mountain in England, geologically speaking. Marvellous views from the summit including, on a clear day, the Isle of Man. Less strenuous is the walk around the lake from where beautiful scenery can be seen from all sides. There are so many fabulous walks that you need never use your car!
We provide a drying area for wet outer clothing and footwear should you encounter our 'liquid sunshine!'
Should you prefer to be a little faster on your feet then mountain bikes and cycles are available for hire from Keswick Bikes and The Lakeland Pedlar here in town. We offer secure cycle storage should you wish to bring your own bike!
We have numerous guide books and maps for you to borrow and will gladly help you plan your day. For the less adventurous and for those who want a relaxing break from the toils of life there is always a cruise on one of the launches that circumnavigate the lake; or maybe just a stroll to Friars Crag where the fells of Walla Crag and Cat Bells can be seen and listen to the quiet murmuring of the water at the lake's edge. You can also feed the ducks!!
The small market town of Keswick hosts a general market on Saturdays and a Farmers' Market each Thursday. Whilst you are here a visit to The Cumberland Pencil Museum is a must! You will see the world's largest pencil and discover that the first ever pencils were made right here in Keswick from locally mined graphite.
There are galleries and museums to visit aswell as our wonderful one screen cinema; take a step back in time where ice creams are still served by an usher during intemission! The Theatre By The Lake has an extensive programme all year round.
Keswick boasts numerous pubs and restaurants some serving the local Jennings Brewery fine Cumbrian ales. All offer different foods from the best cuisine to good old fashioned English pub fare. We also have Chinese, Indian Italian, Thai and Mexican restaurants, all within walking distance of Amble House.
